Are the pro shogi players samurais?

The pro shogi players usually think highly of Japanese tradition. The pro shogi was born 400 years ago during samurai period, but the pro shogi players seem to think lightly of samurai spirits.

I believed the pro shogi players were samurais. Samurais always dare to challenge stronger players and never make any excuse. However, facing strong computers, a top pro shogi player had avoided challenging them for at least 5 years and made miserable excuses for it.

Interestingly, some Japanese CONSERVATIVE people have backed up this pathetic top shogi player. They said that they didn’t want to watch a top pro lose to computer even though other Japanese people had been eager to watch this historical shogi match between a human and a computer.

Why? Japanese conservative people respect samurai spirits and never accept cowards or any excuse for avoiding challenges, don’t they? One of the reasons is that conservative people despise new technology though they have never tried to defect from a high-tech country, Japan, but it doesn’t explain all of the reasons. I think that if you understand this, you could get a new insight into a Japanese or a human.
